And there is nothing worse than hiking with someone with the NFEs.

A good reason not to start a trip with an acquaintance thinking you'll 
be copacetic.  A wife/husband or lifelong friend maybe, but not someone 
you know casually...  And even then journals going back years and years 
are filled with stories of partners finding the crack hiding a fissure 
that exposes a chasm in the relationship.
