Janet,
The trail through the wilderness (Buck's Summit thru Hwy 70 at Belden) was not affected by the fire.  It was only closed as a precautionary measure, as I understand (I live in Quincy).  The local F.S. Recreation staff were headed up there with crosscut saws last summer to log it out.  I hope they got the work done, but I don't know for sure.  Either way, there were not an extreme level of downed trees in the wilderness.

The trail north of Belden to Hwy 36 is logged out most every year by the Backcountry Horsemen of California and I was a part of those efforts last July before the fire.  So the fire started with a "clean slate" as far as downed trees.  Most of the trees that were killed by the recent fire will take a little while to rot before they start coming down.

But this was not the first fire to burn through that region in recent years.  The snags from the first fire will continue to fall each year and block the trail.  But the BCHC will continue to log it out (as they have for 20 years) and I have scheduled some days in early July to be a part of the work.  If you go through after July 14th, we will have the trail clear.

Justin Kooyman, PCTA Regional Representative for the Northern Sierra Region, hiked up a ways up from Belden inbetween the fire and the winter last year and reported to me that the PCT had not taken a servere "hit" with blowdowns yet.  But if you want easy sailing, wait till mid July.

On my section hike last summer I hitched around the area from Bucks
Summit in CA Section M to Hwy 36 (Chester) due to wildfire near Belden.
I plan to hike that section this summer. Has anybody been through the
area who can say what it's like? As far as I can tell from the PCTA
website, it's open, but I'm wondering about blowdowns on the trail from
the fire, or any other problems. Thanks.
Janet
