I also really like the site http://www.learn-orienteering.org/ . It is one
of the most accessible resources I've found for the basics. Since I don't
have the opportunity to use orienteering skills every day I tend to forget
even the minor points so I refer back to it often...someday it will click,
I'm sure.
"Be Expert with Map and Compass" by Björn Kjellström is also a good book
that may be available at your local library, but is probably wayyyyy more
info than is needed for a typical PCT hike.
If your area has any orienteering courses (like listed
here<http://www.mnoc.org/poc.shtml>) this
can be a fun way to learn that is a bit more relevant than trying to take a
bearing on the inside of an REI store.
