Good for you "Base Commander Joan." It is wonderful to have the support of
someone back home who both loves you and covers your back. It sure makes a
difference. Kept a smile on my face in some of the toughest of times.
When Why Not and I hiked the CDT last year, we both noticed a significant
decrease in our strength from our hikes of the PCT just a few years
earlier, 2009 and 2010 respectively. Late 50s to early 60s and we felt it,
but we also met folks a lot older than us out there just lovin' what they
were doing. I'd have to be pretty much incapacitated to ever entirely
give up hiking and backpacking as I've reveled in it since I was a kid, but
the mileage and distance per day are surely more difficult to achieve as
time goes by. Come hell or high water, I plan to be out there like "Helen"
that marvelous, octogenarian, solo, hiking the Oregon section. She was a
real inspiration and I keep a picture of her in my head, of what it can
look like at 80 on the trail. Not bad at all. Then there was the other
"Helen," Helen Thayer who I met at the Dinsmore's in 2011. She was 73 and
her husband Bob was 85, and they had just returned from a 900 mile trek
across the Sahara. Add that to solo and together treks to the North Pole,
being the first people to hike across the Gobi and much more. All of that
done after she turned 50 and he was in his 60s. Bob walked like a young
man when I met him and they both regularly trained in the Cascades, trying
to best their times on the same trails. So far they'd been able to.
Incredible! Two of the sweetest folks you'd ever want to meet. The
Dinsmores hang with some incredible people!
Good for you supporting him. Here's to geezers on trail!
