While the focus of this mailing list is thru hiking, and we tend to
think of things that way, the truth is that thru-hikers don't have
that big an impact on the trail. There just aren't enough of them

Even if the popularity were to swell to AT levels, Thrus just don't
compare to the number of day hikers and weekenders that are out on the
popular sections of trail every week during the hiking season.
Probably more people go up Whitney each weekend than thru hike.

Yes, there are concerns about overwhelming the civilizatized
infrastructure of trail towns and trail angels, but that is a
different issue.
