[pct-l] Bear Canister Requirements

Legally you'll need them from Northern Yosemite (most folks pick them up at
Sonora Pass going south) until Kennedy Meadows. Basically all of the High
Sierra. Both the National Parks and the Wilderness Areas require them.
Some folks cut it a bit short by using them from Tuolumne Meadows to
Cottonwood (exit for Lone Pine).

I like what they've done for the bears over the years, by de-conditioning
them to think of us as a food source. The result is far fewer bears in the
High Country than there were in the 60s and 70s when we were easy pickins.
There is very little for them to eat at those altitudes in the Sierra,
other than backpackers food. So, as we've now effectively protected our
backpacking food from their predations, they've gone to the lower
elevations where they are supposed to be.

I hate carrying a bear can, but do so with a great deal of gratitude for
what it's done for the whole experience of the High Country overall.
