[pct-l] Monkey Butt

Unfortunately, many others share your reservations about packing out
whatever material they wipe with. I talked to the fun and talkative
gentleman at the pack station by Vermilion Valley Resort and they said that
the forest service has been removing toilet paper and human feces from some
of the more popular spots along the trail. It sounded like they have
enlisted the help of the different pack stations.
While I do not enjoy carrying the two poop stained baby wipes I use each
time I do my business, I continue to do so out of respect for other hikers
both present and future. Human feces takes a very long time to break down.
Toilet paper and baby wipes can take even longer because of the materials,
processes and chemicals used to manufacture them. Because the packaging
says a product is biodegradable or compostable does not mean it breaks down
very fast. "Green washing" has fooled many people into thinking certain
product are completely fine. To think that someone would have to remove my
trash is not acceptable to me.
I personally use two wipes a day, average, and I place them in two gallon
sized freezer bags which I then put in a stuff sack. The wipes take up
very little space and are very durable. For those who cannot take
responsibility for their own cleaning material: Please bury everything in a
proper manner. It is a very dissatisfying experience seeing such trash.
For that matter, everyone should bury there fecal matter deep enough that
a unsuspecting hiker will not have an unpleasant encounter with a back
country landmine.
