[pct-l] Question about Section Three

Hi PCTers,
A question about Section Three...a buddy and I are section-hiking SoCal this year, and are looking at Section Three, to start this weekend. We're going to leave the steep climb from I-10 for the fall, when the temps and the risk of Valley Fever will be much less, and plan to get on the PCT near Onyx Summit, about mile 252. Does this make sense to you?
Also, we need to find a place to leave a funky old pick-up, so we can get home when we get off the trail. (We have a ride there.) Any suggestions as to where to leave such a vehicle before I-15, at about mile 342? I guess there's a memorial on the freeway to the Sante Fe Pioneers...would that work?
And...any general advice? From previous trail journals the route looks not too bad, decently wooded, but fairly dry. What else should we know?
Thanks for your help...anyone who sees Reese, please shout it out!
Kit Stolz

It's official. Shroomer sucks now worse than Mags. Well, he would
suck way more if he knew how to post his pictures. (Read this if you
don't know what the heck I'm talking about http://tinyurl.com/mt7lka3
It was a running joke on whiteblaze.)

Egads, I feel sorry for you. This is not the time of year to be back
there.
I seem not to have the problem of losing my appetite. I suppose what
I would bring would be dehydrated vegetables, sweet potatoes and
dehydrated cooked meat (chicken or pork) all mixed together and just
rehydrate it during the day in my jar. Rehydrate a few hours before
meal time. Skip the bars and not bother cooking anything. And some
salty snacks to help combat the hyponatremia.
If I knew there would be a cold spring on my route, I would perhaps
bring a package of instant pudding and some dried milk and make some
pudding at the spring.
As for Southern California in general, especially this year, I would
not go backpacking out there until after the first rain of the
season. This means probably Thanksgiving weekend will be the next
time to go backpacking out there.

After completing my annual section hike and talking with many thruhikers, I have it on good authority that the primary effect of the Wild book is that more middle-aged women know what thruhikers are and are more likely to give them food. So there you have it. :-)

Yeah, yeah, yeah, retirement sure sucks! It just sucked me all the way up
and into the Cariboo Mtns of BC on a kayak for a tour of the Bowron Lakes
circuit and then down to Manning Park for some Alpine hiking and now, hell
I'm holed up at a Macmenamins outside of Portland. Damn it's tough to
suck!!! There must be more I can suck at this summer. Way to go Mags!
Suck it all the way. But I need a young person to come and rescue my
pictures! I sure do suck at computers.

Never feel sorry for a hiker! A too hot hiking day is better than a no hiking day. :-)

Schroomer and Rheinhold, thanks for the info.
And you were correct, I was hoping to hook-up with Scott Williamson, but your info is invaluable.
And w knocking out the CDT as well, you've got my envy.
Any word if Scott Williamson is out on the trail again this season? I'm going to attempt off-list.

[pct-l] Warm weather hiking food
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marcia,
You failed to mention that Scott goes "COLD" (without a stove).
He substitutes heat from fire with heat that burns within him
and warms his black beans dinner by placing the soaking beans
against his hot body while hiking for another hour or so before
dinner.
It is not a steaming hot dinner but somewhat warm.
This will not work for everybody...but you have to remember,
Scott is on a "MISSION", gram counting is taken to the extreme,
and he is willing to sacrifice comfort and push his body to the
limit to accomplish his goal.
Like I said,..."this will not work for everybody".
It may work for hikers willing to sacrifice comfort for "UL".
On some of my MT fast packs I tried to take it one step further.
Scott likes black beans,...I prefer re-fried beans.
However, Scott still needs to stop and take time to eat the black
beans and wash his eating utensils.
I decided if I used a wide mouth "GATOR AID" bottle as my meal bowl
and instead of just adding enough water for the beans to obtain a
pasty consistency, I add enough water so the beans obtain a soup
like consistency, I could not only prepare and warm my meals while
hiking, but also eat (drink), wash and drink the wash water while
hiking without wasting any time, water or calories...I even ate my
instant oatmeal like that.
This may not work for everybody, but hey,...it worked for me and
calories are calories, whether liquid or pasty.
Terry,
You are correct,...Cliff Bars suck on a hot day when you are low
on water and your mouth is dry.
A "SNICKERS" bar probably would be more tasty and require less
water.
Lesson #1 to be learned from this is....Carry sufficient water.
Lesson #2 take food that you enjoy eating even when thirsty.
Lesson #3 calories in the pack are useless if you can't eat them.
Things like crackers, cheese, trail mix, and yes, Cliff Bars can
really suck on a hot day when you are low on water.
A "SNICKERS" bar would slide down much easier.
Instead of crackers and mixed nuts, which require a gallon of
water to get down, try Macadamia Nuts.
At 200 calories per ounce Macadamia Nuts are the most calorie
dense food I am aware of...you have to drink straight oil to beat
that.
They are also delicious and because of their high oil contents
don't require a gallon of water to wash down.
The other good thing about Macadamia Nuts is that they are very
high in Monounsaturated fat which is the most benign oil and
does not affect your cholesterol.
Another suggestion:...when I hike in the Grand Canyon, which can
be awful hot and dry and water is critical, I usually carry one
or two "GREENE PEPPERS".
I know, hardly any calories, but guess what?...lot's of moisture.
Nothing seems to refresh a dry on the trail to long mouth like a
bite of "GREENE PEPPER"...not even warm trail water.

I just returned from a 3 day, roughly 60 mile hike in the Santa
Barbara back country with the temps 90+ the first day and 100+
the next two days. The problems I had were what I'm going to
call "managed" dehydration, which I could deal with, as a just
retired 34 year fire fighter here in So. Cal. I am very aware
of the signs and symptoms of acute heat sickness. The problem I
had was eating. In the three day of hiking, I lost 7 pounds and
the food I had for my mid day meals and calorie boosts were not
just awful, I had no desire to eat if it didn't have some liquid
in it. I learned on the trip that Cliff Bars suck and, I know that
will get a few laughs from most of you but, I would like some
direction that will allow me a safer and nicer hike in hot weather

I would like to know if there is a comprehensive list of Trail Angels in
Washington. Would all Washington Trail Angels respond please. I would like
to be able to refer requests and be available to help other Trail Angels.
Last week I collected a list from the Trout Lake Forest Ranger Station, I
hope to collect more.

>From Hollywood.com:
Reese Witherspoon is about to get Wild. The actress is set to produce and star
in the film adaptation of Cheryl Strayed?s best-selling memoir Wild: From Lost
to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, Indiewire reports. The novel describes
Strayed?s journey hiking the 1100-mile Pacific Crest Trail after struggling with
drug use, divorce, and the death of her mother.
Strayed sent a copy of her tale of self-reflection to Witherspoon herself,
attaching a note that said "I can?t imagine who else would do this." Witherspoon
took interest, as did Nick Hornby (High Fidelity, About a Boy), who will adapt
the novel. There is no director yet, but Fox Searchlight Pictures has the
worldwide rights to distribute the film.
"We are so excited to be working with Fox Searchlight to bring Wild to the
screen," Witherspoon said in a statement. "It is an extraordinary company that
continually strives to bring original, inspirational films to the marketplace.
We are thrilled to collaborate with them on Wild."
The actress better get ready to lace up her hiking boots; filming is supposed to
start later this year.

Hello,
I had a? thought last week as I was doing a 10 day log-out in the Tahoe and Plumas National Forests.? You see, I ran into bicycles twice that were knowingly using the PCT.? One was a single user, the other was a group of three.? I had a radio and threatened to call them in, but when I saw the group it was July 4 and I figured the "twig pigs" would have other things to do.? They just laughed it off and said "do what you want, we're riding through".
?
What if a non-profit was started that collected donations (presumably from hikers) that were spent on game cameras.? They could be positioned on trees out of the reach of bikers and moved from time to time by volunteers.? They could also be locked to the trees with a cable or?? The cameras could take pictures of bikers using the trail and get a "head shot" of the perps.?
?
I wonder if the Law Enforcement Officers would take a case to a judge with evidence collected by civilians?? The bikers would have to be identified of course, but we could post the cameras with a view of the parking lots they use and get license plate numbers if we're lucky.? Or we could post their headshots on a website and see if anybody can identify them.?

Any thoughts on this?? Anybody have any answers to the legal questions?

Its important to report this sort of transgression. Law enforcement may not
be able to get there right away, but they'll keep a record of it and other
such activities. No record; they think there's no problem.

Hi:
I just got off a portion of Section R--we hiked from Donomore Meadows
to CAllahan's. There is water at every spot listed on Halfmile's maps
in that area. There is more water available off trail--below Grouse
Gap and in numerous shallow drainages the PCT crosses which aren't
listed as water sources. There is also a cooler at Long John Saddle
with some water and two coolers south of Grouse Gap that have some pop
and water. Wagner Gap Campground also had water coming from the
spring. The spigot at Mt. Ashland Inn is on, even thought the inn is
up for sale.

When I was there last month you only had two options, a medium or large flat rate priority box. They charged the normal postal rate and mailed it for you.
Maybe I got someone new or they changed their policies. You might want to doublecheck if you have something non-standard to mail.

Re flat rate boxes
Keep in mind the post office is only "allowed to" keep priority flat rate boxes. No padded envelopes or regional boxes.
I found this out the hard way when I had 50 orders to go out.
Regional are up to 15 lbs and flat up to 70 so depending what you are mailing one may be less expensive.
