Keeping in touch with a Spot helps.  A smart phone helps.  Sometimes there is connectivity on trail, esp in Ca.  There will be lots of town or other resupply stops where you can contact each other.  Another strategy is to plan to meet up periodically. For example a few days off in Lake Tahoe or Reno afer the Sierras is a wdlcome break from the trail and a nice vacation spot.  Likewise Crater Lake.  Perhaps he can plan something.
