[pct-l] March 1st

I agree with Diane. While a Thru in one season is both doable and possible and enjoyable for some, attempting to do that for others can become a miserable ordeal - often ending in disappointment when they have to end up giving up the trail. Trying to do it all in one year requires that you put yourself on a rigid schedules to be at certain locations on right days and during the right times necessary to pick up resupplies. For some, that pressure can take much of the fun out of just being on the wonderful PCT.

My own way of going, solo, unsupported, and on just one horse, didn't require that I be on schedules. I resupplied by caching. I would leave my horse in safe care (pre-arranged) and drive my rig ahead, sometimes as far as 340 miles, park in another pre-arranged, safe, place, and hitch back, mount up and ride north. I mostly lived on the trail - whenever possible, I camped near it and out-of-sight of it. I didn't go into towns. I showered while in my remote and private camps. I used the 2.5 gallon solar water heater to provide the convenience of gravity running water at my campsites. So as not to pollute them, I did not wash myself or my cloths, in or near water sources.

I feel that everyone should decide, or discover, what is best for them. It's called HYOH. For equestrians, it is RYOR.

Just hit the trail at the same time as other people (mid-April or
later) and go as far as you can before you have to go home. The whole
"it has to be a thru-hike or nothing" ruins a lot of lives.
