My experience with these infamous PNW "sucker holes" is that they are
actually a trick of the Trail Gods.

The clouds part, the rain stops, and patches of blue sky and sunlight
appear. Peering out cautiously from beneath whatever shelter you were able
to erect/find, you watch the show unfold. Cold and damp, you are drawn to
the promise of good weather like a moth to the flame. You pack up your gear,
don your only dry clothes, shoulder your load, and take your first steps
into the light from the golden orb. You spirits soar as the warmth touches
your face. Your step lightens and you may even sing as you get farther and
farther from your shelter. Only when you are completely exposed with no
possible relief about will the trap be sprung.

Dark clouds suddenly appear, along with wind-driven rain and plunging
temperatures. Once again soaked and chilled, you can almost hear the Trail
Gods laughing...."Got another one!" You begin to serious embrace the concept
of "Stupid Light".
