[pct-l] Half Dome and Clouds Rest

Years ago, I did a day hike to Cloud's Rest from Yosemite Valley; a *long*
day! But the view of Half Dome from the east is spectacular. Go do it!
(I'm going to try to do it this summer, but not a day hike).

Half Dome gets all the attention because it is such an icon of Yosemite.
Plus climbing a dome with cables is kinda cool. But in my opinion, the view
from Cloud's Rest is superior. It is 1,000 feet higher, looks down on Half
Dome, and is desolate of people in comparison to Half Dome. No need to worry
about permits or winning the lottery. No charge. No lines-and yes, HD CAN
have lines at the base of the cables, although the problem has been somewhat
reduced by the permit system.

As others have suggested, if you do plan on HD go very early before the
crowds arrive. Be prepared to hike through a freeway of people coming up
from the valley on your way down. If you don't like walking down big granite
steps that are wet, avoid the Mist Trail and come down the JMT. But if that
does not bother you and it's a hot day, the Mist trail is a blast.
