Hmm, me and my hiking partner in 2010 managed about 450 southern California
PCT miles and were both quite happy in our chacos.  She got blisters in the
first twenty miles, and not again after that.  We didn't have to do any
daily foot care, just a bit of bag-balm before going to bed every few days
to keep the skin from getting too dry.

My longer 1700 mile PCT hike in 07 was in Tevas, but again, just a bit of
bag-balm every now and then, my feet were MUCH happier than they had been in
running shoes on previous hikes.  I'd personally feel very good about
heading out for a thru-hike in Chacos based on my experience, but what
works/doesn't work is a pretty individual thing.
