Scott,
I tried to carry about $50 to $100 cash, with some of it in one s & five s for help with gas and shuttles. I had my wife include some cash in each resupply box to avoid cash advance / ATM fees in town.
I never had a problem using a credit card in towns, but make sure you have a picture id with you. Often I was asked to show the i.d. to prove it was my credit card - which I appreciated, because it was MY credit card being protected.
If you run short of cash at a Trail Angel's house, there are other ways to help. I was almost ou t of cash at Casa de Luna, so I bought a bunch of stuff for the Anderson's trail magic site at the local store, using my credit card - beer, cokes, etc.
ALWAYS make sure you donate to the Trail Angels, and always show respect to their homes.
Good luck,
Mango
