The risk of some pepper spray in your face isn't as big of a deal as
preventing an imminent animal attack, which is likely rare in the
first place.

Spray low to the ground, sweep it side to side some, and make a wall
of mist the animal must get through to get to you. Spraying low gets
the spray down where the animal's nose is and reduces the amount that
might blow back onto your face. The wind isn't as strong down low, so
the spray will not move as fast as the wind speed near your head.

If the animal is human, I don't need to tell anyone what to do with it.
