Good afternoon, Cat,

As with so many features of feminine attire, high-heeled shoes evolved in
response to women’s requests for something to make them more attractive. By
lifting the heel of the foot the (relatively) large calf muscles are raised
and tightened producing what is believed to be a more shapely lower leg.
