[pct-l] Trail closures

As a nearly noob hiker (two seasons under my belt) your question is an excellent one. 
Can I hike off the trail- 50’, a 100’, or 500’, when the USFS closes off a trail? 
My senses say that no, I can not. 
My guess is that a swath of forest acreage is closed off, including the trail. Make sense? 
All other activities would fall into the prohibition.
It’s the man calling the shots.
