[pct-l] Williamson attempting to regain unsupportedPCT speedrecord

I think all long trail "records" have an asterisk. Just the nature of
things. The trails change all the time. I know that the AT record was
broken a couple of years ago, but I never saw a discussion or analysis or
how the trail compared with the trail during other record hikes. It would
be an interesting analysis and discussion. But having said that, skipping a
closed section, even if its "legitimate" in terms of claiming thru-hiker
status, would seem to negate any record claim. ymmv.

So what are we talking about? A record with an asterisk?

IMHO, the trail is whatever it is at the time it is hiked. If 59 miles are
closed, the trail does not include that 59 miles. We're not going to
encourage people to hike closed portions of the trail so they have a "pure"
record are we?

I suppose we should let those attempting the "record" worry about that.

One recreational activity I'm slightly involved in simply asks you prove
the route you took and time it took to complete it. There are no official
"records" being kept for it, either.
