This is an exceptionally dry year. There will be hundreds of hikers leaving Campo and the Kickoff. Be VERY careful with fire. Be sure that you have a campfire permit. You can get one at the KO. Be aware that having a "campfire permit" does not allow you to make a campfire anywhere along the PCT for the first 500+ miles. They are illegal except in fire rings at a few designated vehicle-accessible campgrounds. Become aware of the restrictions in place in the BLM lands and in each of the National Forests through which the PCT passes. You will be hiking through several areas that have been ravaged by wildfires in past years.
Expect the unexpected. Fires have been started when sudden gusts of wind blow over stoves - or when a stove is accidentally knocked over. Be sure that you have cleared all combustibles for at least three feet from your cooking spot. Fires have been started by smokers. Please refrain from smoking while on the PCT.
Have a great hike.
