Good idea to leave a distinctive marker if you leave the trail, but DON'T
leave your pack unattended in bear country. It might not be there when you
get back. Animals might take off with salty things like trekking poles.
Leave something you can afford to lose.

You also have the problem of other hikers coming across your marker item,
assuming it's been dropped or forgotten, and picking it up with the intent
to catch the owner (or maybe just to appropriate it if they're not so nice).
Either way, you can hardly blame them - it's impossible to tell if a random
hat or hiking pole or whatever is intended to be there or was forgotten.
There have been actual instances of this sort of thing happening in the
past.
