And the one common denominator in all these excellent suggestions is that
if you are flying all the way down from Cascade country, go for the best
section of the Sierra, namely anywhere along or close to the JMT. The
mountains in back of Tahoe are beautiful but nowhere near as stunning as
the Southern Sierra and their proximity to the Bay Area and Sacramento make
them the most used and over used section of the Sierra Nevada Range. The
JMT and the PCT north of Tuolumne Mdws gets plenty of use, but not as much
as Desolation Valley in back of Tahoe and it is much more beautiful.

Go in hiking south from Sonora Pass, north from Tuolumne Mdws, into the
Minarets near Mammoth, the North Lake to South Lake Loop out of Bishop over
Muir Pass and Evolution Valley, or come in at Cottonwood, south of Whitney,
or any of the little underused entries from the east side which the Forest
Service will direct you to for a last minute permit, because their quotas
almost never fill up entirely.

Give yourself a few days of slow going to acclimatize as Gourmet is right,
you climb really fast. Some of the trailheads are over 9,000' and you
ascend from there, but it's doable if you take your time.

The main point is that the Southern Sierra has mountains on a world class
level and Tahoe is a bit of a step down in knock your socks off beauty.

Everyone has their favorite stretch of drop dead gorgeous along the PCT.
For some it's the Southern Deserts or the Trinities, but the three most
recommended sections are probably, Goat Rocks, the Northern Cascades and
anywhere along the JMT.

Have a wonderful hike.
