[pct-l] Ultralight tents

I used a Wanderlust Nomad for my PCT hike. It was an old tent at the time
but I still really liked it. The design is now the Lightheart single. It's
a great tent and I would recommend it to anyone.

However, for the CDT last year I got a ZPacks, cuben fiber, double Hexamid
which saved me over a pound on the old Wanderlust. For a couple of oz more
than the single Hex, I had a palace all summer and will use it on my next
long hike. On a few occasions I used it with others as a two person
shelter and it really works for that too, but at the weight that is less
than most single person tents out there. It takes longer to pitch than the
Nomad, but the headroom and floor space are terrific and it stood up to
some 60 to 80 mile per hours winds and rain and kept me dry and snug. I
never even had a stake pull out. I piled rocks on them of course in the
big blasts. Ventilation is so good in this tent that I rarely had
condensation.

But the most common tent on the CDT last year, and used by many hikers with
multiple thru hikes under their belts, was the ZPacks Hexamid Single. If
you go with either of these, get them with the "beak" and pay the extra for
the cuben fiber floor as this pulls up into the doorway to really block
rain when it's blowing out there. It clips in at 6 points and can be
raised or lowered all around you to allow you to bring in more air or to
block a heavy blow on one side while leaving a big gap on the other. All
summer long I got to know and use more of the subtleties Joe has built into
this great little tent.
