Just came across an interesting site, instructables.com.  There are a ton
of DIY ideas and instructions for making your own stuff here.  Of
particular interest to hikers, it seems, is the camp stove page.  Ever seen
a bottlecap stove?  Maybe not all be the best advice, but interesting to
check out if you're searching for ideas.
