Another option besides waypoints is to use the GPS is to draw in your route. Then you will have your location in relation to the trail. It takes a lot f time at home on the computer before the hike. And your route may not be 100percent right on trail, but it gives me confidence I can always get from point A to point B staying on or close to my magenta line.
I am a pretty non techie old lady but I find I like following my predrawn routes. And yes, I carry map and compass too. And yes, except for snow travel it really isn't very needed on PCT.
But playing with it a couple section hike years on PCT has given me confidence using it on CDT.
