[pct-l] Stoveless? Do tell!

I didn't intend to enter this thread, but I have some recent experience so I'll jump in. This summer I went from Chester to Cascade Locks (but skipped most of central OR due to fire reroutes) and was completely stoveless.
First, I disagree with part of what dicentra said "... Any of the just-add-water (aka freezerbag cooking) will work with cold or room temperature water ." I carried a lot of freeze-dried meat-veggie-cheese mixes that I mixed up myself at home fro m bulk purchases (thank you, LDS). To this I would add a carb of some kind. I would add cold water at one meal and eat it the next (about 3 to 4 hours later). Mashed potatoes, hummus, and refried bean powder reconsitituted fully and were tasty as part of the "casserole". Rice and pasta turned gloopy; they need to reconsti titute in boiling water, IMO.
I also ate a lot of peanut butter, made from ground peanut powder mixed with dry honey crystals, Nido, and coconut milk powder. When available I spread it on bagels, tortillas, English muffins, or sandwich rounds. When not avai lable, I ate it straight up.
Slim Jims, individually wrapped cheese sticks, summer sausage, trail mix, etc. will also keep you well-fed till the next town.
Breakfast - granola / bran cereal mix, Nido, and freeze-dried fruits in a ziplock. Add water and let reconstitute while you pack up. Finally, I thought I would really miss a cup of coffee, but the Starbucks iced coffee packets are great in a liter of cold water. I would enjoy one every day for the first hour or so on the trail.
I bet that dicentra's website has some links to other sites that will give more good ideas .
Good luck.

Food?? Yes, I think I need to chime in on this one! :)
I've met stoveless, thru hiking vegans on the trail who were eating quite well. I mention the vegan part b/c that limits their diet even more... I met one guy a few years back that told me he'd been eating all the same things the rest of the thrus were, he was just eating it cold. Cold instant oatmeal makes me want to gag, but if it works for you, go for it!!
If you aren't picky, there is a TON of stuff that will work. Any of the just-add-water (aka freezerbag cooking) will work with cold or room temperature water. It will just take 15-20 minutes to rehydrate instead of 5-10.
I like smoothies (my base is Carnation Instant Breakfast in various flavors) for a traveling breakfast. Wraps of all different kinds for lunch.
CHEESE! Jerky, pepperoni, summer sausage, salami... etc.
I hope that helps some. Always happy to babble on about trail food!

Hi there,
I'm curious to hear from/about people who've done a thru hike with no stove. What are your meal plans like?
Thanks!
