Basically, unless the water is warm, clean, and you use an awful lot
of chlorine, it won't kill Giardia.

Most municipal water systems use filter systems to remove cysts from
surface water, and don't rely on chlorination.

One of the problems with this whole discussion is that there are
multiple hazards that COULD be present, and each one requires
different water treatment. Other sources of GI problems come from poor
sanitation in the back country, and lack of good pot and utensil
washing/sanitation.

The only really safe thing to do is stay at home, and don't go out and hike.
