Footwear is a highly personal issue. There are a broad range of opinions
on the subject. In general, you should look for the lightest shoe you
feel comfortable in. Trail runners are very popular. Sandals are not
uncommon. Boots are rarely seen.

You need a shoe that fits properly. Properly may be different than you
think. I now wear a shoe 1 1/2 sizes larger than what I started the
trail with. When I went with my GF to buy her shoes, with my
encouragement she bought shoes 1 size larger than her foot measures.
Larger is better. You NEED wiggle room for your toes. And many people's
feet grow during their through hike.

As for schlogging up hills, you will be happy not to have to lug the
extra weight of boots up the hill with you. As for ankle support,
lightweight shoes encourage stronger ankles.

Go with the trail runners. And seriously consider buying them 1 or 2
sizes larger than your foot measures.
