Yeah it seems so strange to me to see so many people embracing cell phones
on a thru hike.
For most poeple this could be there - once in a lifetime - chance to
experience life without connectivity.....
And before all the folks chime in on how irresponsible it is NOT to bring a
communication device remember that 10 years ago nobody had one -and I would
never call any of them irresponsible.
If you are headed this next year, give this a thought. At least consider
how your thru hike might be different without being connected to the world
out there.
Personally, I avoid all news (papers, TV, internet) and let everyone know
that I will be in touch only when I am in town - maybe once a week. One of
the joys, at least for me, is escaping the "real world" for an extended
period. Maybe this is selfish - but my wife seems to understand.
