The quote from the mountain biker is true around here--the mountain 
bikers do the biggest part of trail maintenance on our local watershed 
trails. So much, in fact, that at a public meeting to discuss the trails 
the officials in charge publically chided other user groups for their 
lack of involvement, implying that since the mntn bikers do most of the 
work their use has preference even though the trails are multi-use.

Mountain bikers make themselves indespensible to the agencies that are 
responsible for managing trails by doing a lot of organizing and trail 
work--which saves the agencies money. Unfortunately that is the bottom 
line.

Trail runners do a lot of maintenance on the PCT around here--they would 
be another group to form alliances with.
