I carry a spot device but realize not everyone would like to lay out the costs involved. They do rent Personal locator Beacons. If you travel through risky areas, or alone, you may think of renting one. Here just one link. http://plbrentals.com/ They run about $40. per week.

I did inquire and the cost for what SAR did for two days was over $7,000.
But as they said.....the cost to them doesn't matter. They are out there to
save lives. They wish that all the hikers who plan on doing the North
Cascades would carry some kind of GPS locator. It would make the search
effort a lot more productive.
