Tent vs. tarp is an ongoing discussion among ultra-lite PCTers.  Only you
can decide.  I use a tarp  http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=263806
because I like to sleep under the stars and only pitch shelter when
precipitation is probable.

The only creative modification to the tarp – as can be seen at
http://royrobinson.homestead.com/ -- is the addition of a poncho hood for
occasional rain.  For more serious rainy areas I use a somewhat larger tarp
without the hood because I will carry real raingear anyway.
