[pct-l] No on proposition foraging

Diane's post about her blue-jay-hunting friend reminded me of another problem with trying to forage your way up the PCT--it's mostly illegal.  In national parks, all hunting and plant gathering is strictly forbidden.  There's no hunting in California state parks either.

Outside the parks, you still have to abide by seasonal closures, and that would seriously limit your hunting prospects.  You'll see a bunch of quail, grouse, doves, etc. along the trail in California, but you can't hunt any of them legally until September.  Deer season doesn't start until August.  You'd have to get licenses to hunt and fish in all 3 states, which might not be easy to do from the trail and as a non-California resident.

Also, Diane, your friend who's eating blue jays is committing a federal crime every time he kills one.  All songbirds are 100% federally protected in the US.
