There are two main challenges to the PCT, in my observation:

1. Physical challenges, which includes personal fitness and health, proper gear, planning, etc; and

2. Mental challenges.

Interestingly, I think the second is the bigger hurdle.

I remain astonished by how many people come out, who have done little research on the trip, who end up saying "I didn't think it would be like this", or "I never thought of that"

I think it helps a great deal to learn from those who went before: There are a number of various books that describe the authors journey. I personally think Ray Jardine's books are very helpful.

I think that reading trail journals can be very illuminating, both of successful trips, and those cut short. ( I don't consider them "failures", as I think success consists of trying )

Attending events such as Trail Days, or ALDA-west, or the ADZPCTKO can be very educational.

Following this list will give you tremendous information.

Finding a way to be a trail angel....going to the Walker Pass Food Ruck, working on a trail crew...you can learn a lot of insight, and meet people who will expand your horizons.

g'luck!
