I've done this several times.
Collapse the poles as far as possible
Insert them into a mailing tube (from PO or UPS store) and seal
This is especially important if your pols are carbon fiber, which can't take
the hits that metal can
Strap the tube your pack
Put the entire pack into a cheap cloth bag (think giant stuff sack) and tie
it shut
Check the sack to your destination
Either mail the empty sack to yourself at trail's end or buy another one
there for the return flight.

Subject: [pct-l] best way to travel by air with trekking poles?
Hi to all
What is the best way to fly with trekking poles? Am I correct in assuming I
can't carry them on board because of the sharpish tips?
If I am to put them in the aircraft's belly should I lash them to the
outside of my pack? Perhaps make them as short as possible and put them
inside my pack padded with sleeping bag, clothes etc around them to prevent
damage or flexing they are not designed for?
Thanks,
Gideon
