Good afternoon, Mal,

August is a great time to hike the JMT.

To start at the southern end of the JMT I suggest flying to Reno/Tahoe
Airport which is also a stop for Eastern Sierra Transit bus route
http://www.estransit.com/CMS/content/welcome-esta . The southbound bus
stops at Lone Pine, CA which is the customary – and fairly easy -- place to
find a ride up to Whitney Portal which is the southern end of the JMT.

I don’t have information on local permits because I’ve always hiked with a
500-mile PCTA permit.

Enjoy your visit,

Steel-Eye
