HI TORTOISE, > > I still have a 1953 worn and tattered edition of Walter A.
Starr's "Guide to the John Muir Trail and High Sierra Region". I have had
it since it first became available in 1953 - the date of copyright. It is
the first edition. It has been along on many, many, of my Sierra
backpacking and climbing trips. It was my guidebook when I hiked the JMT in
1957. I would never part with it. It is precious. > > MendoRider-Hike

Hi Mendo Rider -

What a really odd coincidence - I picked up a copy of this (the 1970, 12th
edition) at a St Vinnie's thrift store about 5 days ago. It got me curious
so "Googled" Starr's name and read about him - it made the find all the
more meaningful to read the words written by a young man who would soon
lose his life in the mountains. Gave me goosebumps.
Followed the links in the Wikidepia article and went on to read about
others who lost their lives; not that I'm the morbid type, but knowing some
history of those who went before will make my journey all the more
meaningful.
