Hi Rees,

Yes, I have read Hawk's book at least two times. What an adventure, especially for a 16-year-old. I lived in Mendocino 34 years, during the mid-70's, I met Hawk's dad, Robert Greenway and his girlfriend, River. If you knew Robert, you could understand why he named his son "Hawk". I never met Robert's son.

I was aware that Hawk had been bored with school, and quit school and moved to work on a ranch in Covelo - he must have been about 15..He had also had some home schooling from his dad. He was still restless and decided to ride his horse north from Covelo to visit his mother, who lived in Washington. (Leavenworth, Washington, is east of Stevens Pass, off PCT Section K). Hawk rode north from Covelo and eventually reached the PCT in the Marble Mountains. I recall that once his dad drove up to meet him during his journey. He had a very difficult crossing of the river (I don't think the bridge had been built yet) to reach Seiad Valley, where he had a scary experience when approached by a sneaky petafile. Fortunately, Hawk had a gun for protection.

This is a great book of adventure that both equestrians and hikers will enjoy.  As I recall, Hawk did not actually write it until he was in his early 20's. I just checked it on the web search. You can buy it used for as little as $8.00, or new from Amazon for $20.00.

Subject: Just Finished Watching The Show

Ed,

I just finished watching and enjoying the DVD you sent . . . the images bring back lots of wonderful memories from my section hikes over the years.  I also gained an appreciation for challenges that hikers, like myself, do not have to deal with . . . the relative ease of climbing over a downed tree, crossing a raging torrent on a log, etc.  I can only imagine the kind of special relationship that you and Primo must have.

Thanks for sharing it.  I don't know whether you have the Pacific Crest Trailside Reader or not.  In the Oregon/Washington volume there is a wonderful excerpt from the story of Hawk Greenway, who (at the age of 16) rode his horse Fatima along the PCT from the Marble Mountains to Leavenworth, Washington.  This was 1976 with the traffic on the trail was very limited.  A pretty amazing solo adventure.  You may know of his story (he wrote the account of his adventure is a book titled The Trail North).  I'm sure you've read the accounts of the Mulfords and their early ride.
