I came across a new 'thru-hike' book recently - sounded 'interesting', so I bought it...
Once in my hands, I pretty much read straight through it without putting it down - it's that good!
The often neglected aspect of a thru-hike (psychological - mental & emotional) is very well covered in
"Appalachian Trials" by Zach Davis, <http://amzn.to/ywRT5b>, in paperback or Kindle...
Though AT oriented, 'most' of the book can be directly correlated to any long thru-hike, including the PCT...

I highly recommend it!
(I have no affiliation nor receive any kickbacks or such!! It's simply a great 'mental' prep thru-hike book...)

Happy trails!!!
Jim (PITA)
