Reminds me of some JMT hikers we met one year.  Theirbear canwas stuffed full, so they left a few things out that they thought a bear wouldn't be interested in.
Things looked good the next morning as they started hiking towards Viginia Lake.  Then they noticed the smell of DEET...the small bottle stored in a pants pocket was leaking.  Further inspection revealed tooth marks from the bear who had checked it out!

Even though we can see the peaks above the PCT from our house I know no 
one locally that loves hiking long distances on the PCT.  Also there is 
a local PCT office in our Plumas National Forest area.  I would love 
nothing better than a get-together with other long distance hikers in 
our area, for a social event.
