Hi Robert,
Don't worry about your hands being cold, worry about the cold Bear Vault--it will be stubborn at lower temperatures. Here was my brilliant solution:brilliant Montbell's 1.4 ounce Handy Scoop, which made a perfect lever for poking down those tricky plastic locks, and as an added benefit, made my potty trowel dual purpose. I believe that is required for any item in a pack claiming to be ultra-light.
