The decoy technique that you reported the mouse used was also used by 
bears in Yosemite National Park on the PCT near the Tuolomne River. The 
way it worked: Bear number 1 would come into a hiker camp in the evening 
while people were fixing food and make off with a back pack. The people 
would run en masse following the bear to retrieve their property. In the 
mean time, Bear #2 comes into the camp and absconds with dinner. This 
happened to some hikers while I was camping in the area in the late 
90's.
