[pct-l] Tehachapi to Kennedy Meadows

Yogi's Handbook says there are two ways to go from Tehachapi to Kennedy
Meadows. One of the ways is 10 miles shorter than the other one. But she
only shows the longer one. Where does the extra 10 miles come from? I don't
see any point in hiking 10 miles if I don't need to.
 
Any info on this?
