2011 was an extremely high snow year and 2012 is an extremely low snow 
year. With that in mind you can get a very good idea of what hikers 
actually did:

What it doesn't show and can only be 'surmised' from the journals is, 
generally speaking, that hikers started a bit too early in 2011 as many 
found themselves in the heavy snows of the Sierra earlier than they liked.
