Steven,
I use a Samsung Galaxy S on Verizon and BackCountry Navigator (I think
its a $10.00 app). BCN allows you to download Topo and road maps from
a variety of sources to the SD card (I've got about 12 GB's loaded on a
16 GB SC card at this time). I normally carry 2 or 3 spare batteries
and a lightweight charger. Normally I only turn it on when I need it,
otherwise its left off in a waterproof bag.
Works great, I normally leave the data and cell service turned off to
extend my battery life.
