Hi Shepherd,
That's an easy one. Here's what I would do. Just hike up the trail towards Bishop Pass and find a place to stealth camp well off the trail - out of sight of it. There would be a suitable, private, place south of the trail less than two miles up.
Have a good hike.

Subject: [pct-l] South Lake camping
I will be leaving my car near South Lake, above Bishop where a friend
will shuttle me to another trail head for my return hike. I would like
to spend the night before up there so as to start getting use to the
altitude. Is there camping near the parking there and does anyone know
if there is free camping? Thanks.
Shepherd
