Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat!

Go to Trailjournals.com and check out the gear lists that people post
in their journals. Make sure you go to the PCT section because the AT
has a different climate.

One thing you may consider is attending kickoff next April. Then you
can see all the gear in action as thru-hikers from all over the trail
converge at the campground. You can see all the tents and packs and
things in use as well as in vendor booths. You can talk to hikers
about what works and what doesn't. You can see the gear making
contest. A lot of thru-hikers make their own gear. I certainly do.

If you have no experience hiking, you should start doing weekend
trips if you can right away to get some experience. Here's a good
article (How to Dirt Bag and Gear Shop like a Professional) on how to
get started even if you don't have much gear:

Also, you may get some good ideas reading Ray Jardine's Beyond
Backpacking. He talks about lightening your load. You can also read
the forums and free articles on the backpackinglight.com website for
more information about ultralight backpacking. I'd say most of the
hikers use at least some ultralight equipment. ULA and Gossamer Gear
packs are very popular. Tarptent tents are very popular. Most hikers
use trail runners rather than boots and plastic aquafina or whatever
water bottles rather than heavier more expensive nalgenes. Etc. Good
to read up before you start wasting money on stuff.
