Dear Sherry
Halfmile's maps are PDF format. They cannot be used in a GPS.
There are two site for free maps for GPS.
You can obtain California topo map from this site: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/
You can obtain street maps from this site http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
If you struggle for a while, you can integrate several kind of maps
into one GPS format with SendMap20.exe :http://cgpsmapper.com/buy.htm
If you use Garmin map 60, or 62
You can download the integrated maps I had obtained from these sites
from my server:
http://psycho01.edu.u-toyama.ac.jp/garmin/gmapsupp.img
Your task is copy this file under Garmin folder of your microSD. And
set this microSD in your GPS.

Sincerely
