I would suggest giving some thought to what you want out of the hike. This will affect your planning.
Read the Owen's Thruhiking Papers at http://www.spiriteaglehome.com/THP_top.html for some things to think about.

One of the many suggestions for a long hike, or any large task, is to break it down into smaller pieces to work on. Try just planning the first section or maybe a section you may be familiar with. Then take that experience to continue with the other sections.
