Good morning, Aimless,
Buy-as-you-go resupply depends greatly how particular you are, and whether
you have any specific dietary needs. I primarily resupply through boxes
from home in Oregon, but I can also get by nicely on locally-purchased
items. Since I eat cold, no-cook food on the trail much of what I eat is
snack-food anyway. http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=165752
Trail references, like Yogi’s handbook, give a pretty good description of
food store opportunities at the various common on-trail, or near-trail,
towns. Even many devoted buy-as-you-go hikers stop at certain towns and
not only resupply for the next segment, but they also buy more and send it
ahead by USPS Priority Mail. For example: One can buy in Mojave or
Tehachapi and send ahead to Kennedy Meadows. At Independence or Lone Pine
one can send a box to Tuolumne Meadows with food to get to Reno/Tahoe.
Ashland
in S. Oregon is a common – and very good – resupply stop where boxes can be
sent ahead to 3-4 additional points in Oregon. Similarly, the last stop in
Oregon -- Cascade Locks -- is a good resupply point exactly on the trail
and boxes can be prepared and sent ahead to points in Washington; all of
them to the Canada/US border if one likes.
Enjoy your planning,
