Not like if you are using a map and compass and the compass breaks,
huh..............   ;o)
 
For that matter, you don't even have to break it. Compasses are inherently
inaccurate, as are maps. Out of the box, brand new, the declination must be
properly set with the most recent data. You must also hope that magnetic
north doesn't move on you while you are using it, something that happens
quite frequently. You also need to hope that there are no local magnetic
anomalies or large ore deposit under you or near you. 
 
Under no circumstances would I rely on a map and compass. Been there, done
that, and damn near died as a result.

No real example except as you have said, gps break or run out of juice and
if that is your compass, your map and your direction finder, your screwed.
